A Cute Banshee? Yes! But...

Are you the parent, relative, or caregiver of an artistic child who loves mythical creatures and fantasy? If so, she or he would most likely enjoy this book where the publisher and illustrator take them through drawing 50 different mythical creatures in 9 steps. They use a loose grid method, a three-by-three grid. Perhaps it would have been better if the grid was a little finer and tightly focused on the creature (as it only predominantly filled the center square). As

As one of the unartistic souls in an artistic family, books like this always intrigued me because they give me hope that I could draw something passable. I did think the difference between the steps at times was too great for a relatively unartistic person. But I think that someone who does have that bent and who loves fantasy would enjoy attempting to make these mostly cute fantasy creatures. I like that at the beginning of the book they break down how to work with basic shapes to get started drawing. They actually state that you could work with the book in two ways, focusing on getting the essential shapes right (the dashed lines in the step-by-step portion) before getting to the details or just going straight to the darker lines for the finished version.

I do have a couple of issues with the book aside from the ones mentioned. It actually takes a while to get to the drawing portion of the book, as the publishers have provided some trivia questions and factoids about the mythical creatures. I think that both these could have been put on the last page for each animal rather than take an entirely separate section to do so. There is plenty of space to add, a line or two about what the creature is or what it is known for, rather than clutter the start of the book. While kids might find that information fascinating, those who want to draw will want to just get to that.

As you might have gathered, the book has a significant written portion, and unfortunately, it does not appear to have been copyedited or proofread. There are so many errors in this book, from comma splices to wrong words to incorrect capitalization to incorrect and inconsistent use of hyphens, etc. I never like to see this in a children's book. Children are such sponges who learn from every place, including books like this. There was even one spot where the beginning of the sentence was not capitalized; in that same sentence, they used the wrong word. I did receive a PDF advance reader copy, but from what I saw of the published edition in the preview at Amazon, the errors persist in the published version. So, while I think this book could be good for artistic children, I don't like all the language errors.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Wonderful book

My daughter really enjoyed this book. It includes some cute meanings of words for children to have fun with. My daughter was entertained by this book and also the step by step drawing instructions. I recommend this book and your child will have a lot of fun within to keep your child engaged. Well done:)

Let Your Creative Side Soar!

What a unique idea for a book! I learned so much all while learning to tap into my creative side. You too can learn about mythical creatures while improving your illustration skills. Everything is broken down in a simple yet fun way. I love how the author includes QR codes and ways to check if your skill set matches up.
